THE COUNT UP...BLAST UP

Greetings friends...T-Minus 10...T-minus 9...T-minus 8...T-minus 7...T-minus 6...T-minus...5...
T-minus 4...T-minus 3...T-minus 2...T-minus 1....BLAST-OFF. I love to watch a rocket launch. I love the anticipation as the countdown ensues...and the rocket is poised to reach the bonds of the heavens... breaking the hold of the gravity of earth.

NOTE: I equate this blasting off...to the word HALLEL...where we get the word HALLELUJAH. That word for praise...and praise God....means to exult...jump up...spin around...rave on...get clamorously foolish. Just like that mighty rocket BLASTS OFF...and breaks the hold of gravity...so it is with our PRAISE...our HALLEL to God...that breaks the hold of the gravity of this world on our spiritual self. It's like the song says...

Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in His wonderful face
And the THINGS OF EARTH
Will grow strangely DIM
In the light of His GLORY AND GRACE...BLAST OFF

There is another factor to this lift off...this blast off...from the mundane events of this world....when you are getting discouraged and down. When your life is in a rut...like a grave with both ends knocked out as you go back and forth...over and over...rehearsing in your mind everything that is wrong in your life. The is another aspect of COUNTING....that will poise you for BLAST OFF...a LIFTING OFF of the cares of this world. It is COUNTING your blessings.

In the Ruminator Class...we have a phrase that speaks of thinking, saying and doing...and it works for the negative...and it works for the positive.

"Unrestrained thoughts (what we think)...produces unrestrained words (what we say)...resulting in unrestrained actions (what we do).

Counting our blessings...means that we have to focus on the good in our lives.. versus the troubles. See the collage with various counts. You've got COUNT Basie. I was honored to see the Count on one of my first dates with Brenda... when we went to the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville Tennessee around 1969. For $15.00...we got to see in the round...Tom Jones (during the peak of his popularity...Gladys Knight and the Pips (whoo...whoo)...and COUNT Basie and His Band of Renown. Good date...Good music...GOOD GOD!!

Another COUNT who is a favorite of mine...and Jack Hayford...is the lovable Muppet...COUNT von COUNT. The COUNT loves to COUNT anything. He will begin COUNTING something...in a slow Transylvanian accent...Ooooooooone....
Twooooooooooooo....Thrreeeeeeeeeee...and then he will laugh...Ah-ah-ah-ha.

The last picture...is just a counting on the fingers (my favorite method of math prior to a calculator...0,1,2,3,4,5...and then add the toes)

In 1897...two men wrote a song...that became known world0-wide...called COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS. Johnson Oatman (pictured here)...wrote the words...and Edwin O. Excell wrote the music. Oatman was a Methodist Episcopal minister...who was also a full time retail and insurance man. His other songs included:
No, Not One...Higher Ground...The Hallelujah Side. The song was sung along with other classic hymns during the WELSH REVIVAL. Gipys Smith (evangelist) was quoted in the LONDON TIMES..about the song...
"In South London the men sing it, the boys whistle it, and the women rock their babies to sleep singing this hymn."

When upon life's billows

Life's Billows...being tossed between the billows...discouragement...thoughts of all being lost...burdens...loads of care...the cross that you bear, admid conflicts (great or small)...are REALITIES. In contrast...we have the option of RE-FOCUSING our THINKING...that will result in a RE-FOCUSING of our SPEAKING...that will REFOCUS...our ACTIONS.

The song encourages us not only to think about how God good is...but says to COUNT THEM...and not only to count them...but to NAME THEM...one by one. When you begin to do this...the column with crud...the things of earth...become strangely dim...in the light of the COUNTED BLESSINGS...and His GLORY AND GRACE...BLAST OFF...or BLAST UP...the pull of the GRAVITY OF THIS WORLD....loosens.

NOTE: This is NOT a denial of the bad stuff in the world...or the bad stuff in your life...BUT it is denial of the bad stuff the right to RULE YOUR LIFE.

As it says in Philippians 4:8..."Finally brethren...whatever is TRUE...whatever is HONORABLE...whatever is of GOOD REPORT...whatever is RIGHT...whatever is PURE... whatever is LOVELY...if there is any EXCELLENCE...and if ANYTHING IS WORTHY OF PRAISE...LET (allow) your MIND to DWELL ON THESE (the stuff just listed versus the junk)."

"Rejoice in the Lord ALWAYS (during the good, bad, and ugly)...AGAIN (in case you didn't here it the first time)...REJOICE. Let (allow it to happen) you forbearing (appropriate, gentle, moderate) spirit be known to all men. THE LORD IS NEAR....BE ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING (don't be anxious)...but in EVERYTHING (the good, the bad, and the ugly)...by (1) prayer [talking to God]...(2) supplication (humble petitioning...counting, naming one by one)...(3) with THANKSGIVING (by faith, before you see anything change)...LET (allow it to happen) your REQUEST be made known to God." (Philippians 4:4-6...Ruminator Version)

NOTE: God knows...but the encouragement is for you to allow God into your life and situation and to help you. We have the power to edge God out of our life and situation. But when we begin to COUNT OUR BLESSINGS...naming their one by one...things can begin to change... the things of earth growing strangely dim...in the light of His glory and grace.

The CAUSE AND EFFECT of you changing your THINKING...SPEAKING...DOING...is...THE PEACE OF GOD...WHICH SURPASSES ALL COMPREHENSION SHALL GUARD YOU HEARS AND YOUR MINDS IN CHRIST JESUS. (Philippians 4:7) then Philippians 4:8 kicks in with the MIND DWELLING PRINCIPLE.

Isaiah 26:3 says..."the steadfast of mind Thou wilt be kept in perfect PERFECT PEACE (why) because it is stayed on you (because He trusts in Thee)."

In Romans 8:5-8...we seen where a MIND-SET will lead you. "For those who are according to the FLESH...SET THEIR MINDS on the THINGS OF THE FLESH...but those who are according to the SPIRIT...the things of the Spirit. For the MIND SET on the FLESH is DEATH...but the MIND SET ON THE SPIRIT...is LIFE and PEACE, because the MIND is SET on the FLESH...is HOSTILE TOWARD God...for it does not subject itself to the law of God...for it is not even able to do so...and those who are IN THE FLESH...cannot PLEASE GOD (see Hebrews 11:6 on how it is possible to please God).

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS...NAME THEM ONE BY ONE....

FINAL THOUGHTS...FINALLY

One of my favorite places of COUNTING...is found in PSALM 103:1-5. It is the Psalmists admonishes to his soul...to BLESS the Lord. This is to be ALL THAT IS WITHIN US TO DO...to BLESS HIS HOLY NAME. Here is just some examples of the BLESSINGS YOU CAN COUNT...and to forget NONE (no not one) of his BENEFITS...

1. Pardons ALL your iniquities
2. Heals all your diseases
3. Redeems you life from the pit
4. Who crowns you with loving kindness and compassion
5. Who satisfies your years with good things
6. So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.

Well...that is a good place to start with your COUNTDOWN.

Count your blessings name them one by one...count your blessings see what God has done...Count your blessings...name them one..by..one..count your many blessings SEE WHAT GOD HAS DONE.

PERFECT PEACE IN NOT SO PERFECT TIMES

Hello fellow planet dwellers. How's the STORMS in your life? Well...if you are living on planet earth...you either are going through a storm...or you will be going through a storm. Trouble is like concrete...it will either be cracked or just not cracked yet.

"Earthquakes...famines...wars...rumours of war...pestilence...violence...and murders by the score..." These are the words from that rockin' Jesus song... called ENDTIME BLUES IF YOU DON'T KNOW JESUS. When the band that I was part of was playing at a Girls correction school in Tullahoma...I announced the name of the song...and a girl shouted out..."Don't sing me no blues!" But the bottom line is...STORMS rage against houses built on sand...and houses built on rock. It rains on the just and the unjust...SO...you need something...someone to weather you THROUGH THE STORM.

What has happened to you lately? Discouraging news...disappointments... overwhelming emotions...situations that only get worse...circumstances that you are always the victim of...may be the NORM in your life. We live in a CURSED, FALLEN WORLD...with an enemy that is out to get you with well orchestrated schemes...to put on a yoke, a burden, an oppression on you. As believers...we don't deny the reality of what is going on in this world... the collective world as a whole and the world in general...and in your own private world...BUT...we do deny to the enemy the right or authority to KEEP US DOWN.

I find myself getting in the RUT OF COMPLACENCY in my walk with the Lord. I find myself being on automatic pilot.

NOTE: A rut has been defined as a grave with both ends knocked out.

As I walk out this journey...I sometimes find myself just going through the emotions... voice of emotions. Life plods along like the footsteps in a foggy night where I can't see where I am going...but I put one step in front of the other...hoping it will lead me somewhere. I find myself living on PAST experiences and becoming complacent...and in my complacency...letting myself go...body, soul, and spirit.

I find myself like the character played by Michael Keaton in the movie MR. MOM. He is released from his place of security and his wife becomes a working superstar in advertising. He takes over his wife's position as keeper of the house...and realizes the routine of the mundane...and LET'S HIMSELF GO. He becomes void of emotion and any direction or drive. He becomes sloppy in his work, his appearance and his attitude.
He then realizes that he must TAKE BACK HIS LIFE...in the MIDST OF THE MUNDANE.

NOTE: Sometimes...in the midst of the mundane...we have to stand up and take a stand...to BREAK THE CYCLE OF COMPLACENCY. If we want to MOVE ON to the next future leg of our journey...we have to live it out where we are in the present...and not live in the past experience (good or bad).

When you don't DO SOMETHING...ANYTHING can take control and rule you. When you don't stand, resist, fight, push back against the STORM...whatever is on the attack...will flood in and DOMINATE...and take over you life...take over you mindset...take over you words...and take over your actions.

UNRESTRAINED THOUGHTS (what you think)...PRODUCE UNRESTRAINED WORDS (what you speak) RESULTING IN UNRESTRAINED ACTIONS (what you do). You either are going to REACT in the flesh (which will result in death)...or you will RESPOND in the Spirit (which will result in life and peace).

There is a SONG found in the book of Isaiah...that speaks of the PEACE that falls in the realm of PERFECT.

"In that day...shall THIS SONG be SUNG in the land of Judah (praise)...we have a strong city...the Lord SETS UP SALVATION as walls and bulwarks. Open the gates, that the [uncompromisingly] righteous nation which keeps her faith and her troth with God may enter in. You will GUARD him and KEEP him in PERFECT and CONSTANT PEACE...whose MIND is STAYED on You...and HOPES CONFIDENTLY IN YOU...so TRUST IN THE LORD--COMMIT YOURSELF to Him--forever...for the Lord God is AN EVERLASTING ROCK--THE ROCK OF AGES." (Isaiah 26:3)

Isn't that what you need now? I know that is EXACTLY what is needed in the fragile times that we live.


A few years ago...after I returned back from a teaching trip to Kenya, Africa...I was called into my bosses office...and the director of Human Services was in there. They informed me that they were cutting my position to PART TIME. This meant...20 hours a week (and I would still have to go home if there were no patients so it could be less than 20 hours)...there would be a cut in benefits (thank God for the Benefits Package found in Psalm 103:1-5)...there would be an increase in cost for health insurance...etc. This is not to mention the wounds to my PRIDE (which probably needed to be wounded in the first place). After all...I had been out doing the work of the Lord...and this is how I was rewarded? Around the same time I had been reading a book by JACK HAYFORD called...PURSUING THE WILL OF GOD (Reflections and Meditations on the Life of Abraham). The book spoke of pursuing the will of God and the UNEXPECTED CROSSROADS that you may find yourself at...that will sneak up and take you by surprise...and how in these times you must YIELD YOUR WILL..to HIS WILL.

NOTE: As with many people...when you are studying the Word...trying to walk out the Word.. the WORD will be tested and tried in your life. This is my experience in what I am studying and the Ramblings that I write. I remember at that time that I was sharing with Brenda about the book and our current experiences at that time...and she stated..."You've got to stop reading these books."

During these hard emotional and financial times...I got a word of encouragement from my friends, worship pastor, spiritual prod...WAYNE BERRY. He sent me a simple e-mail that read..."THERE ARE MANY WELLS IN THE LAND TO DRAW FROM. " This was based on Isaiah 12:3 and Psalm 84:1. There are WELLS (plural) and SPRINGS (plural) that will get your through (keep on moving...don't stop in the valley...cause you will come out the other side) the VALLEY OF TEARS/WEEPING...and it will be made a PLACE OF WELLS/SPRINGS (plural)...where the early rain will FILL [THE POOLS] (plural) with BLESSINGS.

This sparked in me...the hope and faith to go no. I was NOT LIMITED by my circumstances or my present situation. I knew...that the Word of God was true and that....

"And my God will liberally supply (fill to the full) your EVERY NEED according to His riches in glory in CHRIST JESUS." (Philippians 4:19
The Amplified Bible)

and...

"I have STRENGTH for ALL THINGS in CHRIST who EMPOWERS me---I am READY for ANYTHING...and equal to ANYTHING THROUGH HIM....Who INFUSES INNER STRENGTH in me...[that is I am self-sufficient in CHRIST'S SUFFICIENCY].
Philippians 4:13 The Amplified Bible)

As I write this Rambling...I am listening to Wayne and our worship team at S.A. sing a song about how God will help the BROKEN ONES.

Just a snippet of that SONG OF ENCOURAGEMENT goes like this:

If you bow down...way down
You may find a place where few have gone
And if you stay down...stay way down
You may see things that few are shown

When you humble yourself under God's mighty hand
He will lift you up and steady you to stand
He will embrace...the Broken Ones

God will flood your heart with PERFECT PEACE

At the beginning of this Rambling...I spoke of how you have to stand against the onslaught. PRIOR TO...standing, resisting, fighting, pushing back...you HAVE TO POSITION YOURSELF PROPERLY.

"Therefore HUMBLE YOURSELVES (demote, lower yourselves in your own estimation)...under the MIGHTY HAND OF GOD...that in due time/season...He may EXALT YOU. Casting the WHOLE OF YOUR CARE ---all your anxieties...all your worries...all your concerns...once and for all--on Him; for He cares for you affectionately, and cares about you watchfully. Be well-balanced--temperate, sober minded; be vigilant and cautious AT ALL TIMES...for the ENEMY of yours...the devil (little d)...roams around like a lion roaring (in fierce hunger] seeking someone to seize upon and devour. WITHSTAND HIM...be firm in faith [against his onset]...rooted, established, strong, immovable and determined---knowing that the same (identical) sufferings are appointed to your brotherhood (the whole body of Christians) throughout the world." (I Peter 5:6-9 The Amplified Bible)

WHAT YOU SEE...IS NOT ALWAYS WHAT YOU GET.

Hello Faith People. What you see...ain't always what you get. Just ask Earnest T. Bass. He wanted to woo Charlene Darling with his charms. He just want to court the love of his life... even though she was married by Sheriff Andy Griffith of Mayberry. To resolve the problem... a "real preacher" was coming through...and Dud and Charlene were going to get married by a "real preacher" to satisfy Earnest T. Bass. Ernest T. plotted to steal the bride before the wedding could take place. Everyone was in place for the wedding...the preacher was there... brothers and father of the bride was there...the witnesses were there...the bride and groom were ready to make there vows. SUDDENLY...Ernest T. should up and kidnapped the bride. All looked well...until...he removed the veil...and discovered that his bride was in reality a substitute...Deputy Barney Fife. The real bride was safely being married. Barney Fife's response to Briscoe Darling's assertion of Ernest T. Bass being a strange...Barney sums it it...
"HE'S A NUT." What he saw...was not what he got.

Look at a couple of examples:

Did you see I SAW A BUN DANCE ON THE TABLE...or did you see I SAW ABUNDANCE ON THE TABLE?

Did you see GOD IS NO WHERE or did you see GOD IS NOW HERE?

What you see...is what you believe...is what you speak...is how you act. IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW YOU LOOK AT IT. It's the old... the glass is half empty or half full MINDSET.

We see with either a RENEWED MIND...or an UNRENEWED MIND. When we are BELIEVERS in the D.B.R...and we keep our minds renewed with the washing of the water of the WORD OF GOD...we begin to look at things DIFFERENTLY than a lost person or a carnal Christian.

"For we WALK BY FAITH [that is, we REGULATE our lives and conduct ourselves by our conviction or belief respecting man's relationship to God and divine things, with trust and holy fervor; thus WE WALK]...not by SIGHT or APPEARANCE."
(II Corinthians 5:7 The Amplified Bible)

"Now FAITH IS...the assurance (the confirmation, the title-deed) of the things [we] HOPED FOR......being the proof of things/evidence of things [we]...DO NOT SEE...and the CONVICTION OF THEIR REALITY---FAITH...PERCEIVING...as REAL FACT...what is NOT...
REVEALED TO THE SENSES." (Hebrews 11:1 The Amplified Bible)

"But without FAITH it is IMPOSSIBLE to please and be satisfactory to Him. For WHOEVER (that would be you) would come near to God...must (necessarily) believe that God exists and that He is the Rewarder of those who EARNESTLY and DILIGENTLY...SEE HIM (out)." (Hebrews 11:6)

What do you see...when debt overwhelms you...when sickness lingers...when anxiety, worry, and tension pulls you in twenty different directions. Do you see WOE IS ME...this must be God's will for me...or do you see:

"And MY GOD will liberally SUPPLY (fill to the full) your EVERY NEED according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus."
(Philippians 4:19)

Do you see:

"I have STRENGTH for ALL THINGS in Christ Who empowers me--I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses INNER STRENGTH INTO ME, [that is, I am self-sufficient in CHRIST'S SUFFICIENCY]. (Phillipians 4:13)

Whatever you are going through....don't FOCUS on your problems/needs...and don't deny that you have problems/needs....HOWEVER... look intently into the face of God...via the WORD OF GOD...and begin to speak your solution instead of the problem. As the old song says... "Turn your eyes upon Jesus...look full in His Wonderful face...and the THINGS OF EARTH will grow strangely dim...in the light of His GLORY AND GRACE. Between the point of prayer....................................................................and the point of provision....walk by faith, act by faith, speak by faith. Remember:

UNRESTRAINED THOUGHTS....PRODUCE UNRESTRAINED WORDS....RESULTING IN UNRESTRAINED ACTIONS. What we THINK...what we SAY...what we DO...is based on if we SEE....I SAW ABUNDANCE ON THE TABLE...and...GOD IS NOW HERE.

THE RUMBLE

Hello friends and Struggling Rumblers...as Dean Martin sings..."Ain't That A Kick In The Head."

Do you ever feel like Chuck Norris on the receiving end of a right cross from Bill "Superfoot" Wallace? You are walking along...minding your own business... when WHAM!!!! Your head is snapped around...you feel the connection of the leather glove on your chin...the electric sensation goes to your brain...the idea of laying down and saying, NO MAS, NO MAS...NO MORE, NO MORE." In the movie A FORCE OF ONE...after Chuck received this devastating blow...he rallied...and ended up the winner by Superfoots default...Superfoot died. Of course...it is a movie...and the bad guy did lose...and the good guy did win...because that is how it is written in the script...and the Director...Producer... wanted the movie to end that way.


Well...chicky...life hurts. There ain't no script...and there ain't no one to yell cut when life gets tough. You have to play with the cards that are dealt ya...you have to lay down and just accept whatever comes your way...and their ain't nuttin' that you can do about it...OR is there? There just might be an ACE up the sleeve to pull out at the last minute.

We may not have a SCRIPT...but we do have SCRIPT-ture...and we many not have a DIRECTOR...but we do have some one who can DIRECT or steps...and we may not have a PRODUCER...but we do have a CREATOR...who has a destiny and purpose for our lives...IF we do not give up...just because we are on the receiving end of a hard...knockout... punch. When the going gets tough...this is where the TOUGH get going... straight to the Word of God. Take the bullet out of your pocket...and load up.


When Billy Jack is facing the odds against him...he does the only thing that he can do...take off his boots...and start KICKIN'

Bruce Cockburn waxes poetic...in his song LOVERS IN A DANGEROUS TIME...when he states, "Nothing worth having comes without some kind of FIGHT...Got to KICK at the DARKNESS...until it BLEEDS DAYLIGHT."

Billy Jack relied on Hapkido...Old Reliable Barney Fife relies on his bullet (singular)...Chuck Norris relied on a Script...but we rely on The Word of God.

In 1957...just before Elvis was shipped off to Germany as he answered the call of Uncle Sam... he filmed what I consider to be his best movie...KING CREOLE. Multiple times...Danny Fisher (Elvis)...protected Ronnie (Carolyn Jones aka Morticia on the Addams Family)...the girlfriend of mobster Maxie Fields (Walter Mathau of the Odd Couple fame). Danny saw something in Ronnie...that made him think that she was worth fighting...and yes maybe dying for...so he would use whatever was at his disposal...to protect what he felt was worth protecting.


As Michael Buffer announces............

Leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetttttssssssssss get ready to RUUUUUMMMMBBBLLLE!!!!

The question is...are you willing to take a STAND...and FIGHT...for what satan/devil (little s and d) are trying to take away from you? Are righteousness...peace...and joy worth the RUMBLE?

Gather round children...and let Uncle Rod tell you a story. There once was a young lad...who accepted Jesus as his personal Saviour...and everything was lovely for the next 37 years...and the young lad and his lovely lady lived HAPPILY EVER AFTER.

Wasn't that a nice story boys and girls? Well...it is only partially true. There was a remarkable change in the life of the young lad and his lady...but just because they accepted Jesus did NOT mean that they were immune from trouble...in some ways...it intensified.

Hardships...produced character. To walk in the Kingdom of God...be ready for battles, warfare, trials, troubles, tribulations, afflictions, persecutions...but at the same time be ready for victories, deliverance, provision, maturity, etc.

"And from the days of John the Baptist (the big dipper) until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence (is forcefully entered)...and violent men take it (seize it for themselves) by force." Matthew 11:12 To me this speaks of a hunger and tenacity for the kingdom in the face of hardships...and not giving up.

"And after they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, STRENGTHENING the souls of the disciples, ENCOURAGING them to CONTINUE (not give up) in FAITH...and saying...Through many TRIBULATIONS we must enter the kingdom of God." Acts 14:21,22)
Again...in the face of TROUBLE...DON'T GIVE UP.

We live in a CURSED and FALLEN world...and DARKNESS engulfs the souls of mankind...with us with the responsibility of being STREAMS OF LIGHT INTO DARKENED CORNERS.

There is method to this madness of tribulations in our lives. There is process in the maturity mambo.

"Therefore, having been justified by FAITH, we have PEACE WITH GOD through our Lord Jesus Christ." (Romans 5:1) Everyone can give a big AMEN to the PEACE OF GOD....but we must read on.

"...though whom also we have obtained our introduction by FAITH into this GRACE...in which we STAND...and we exult (jump up and spin around)...in HOPE OF THE GLORY OF GOD." (Romans 5:2) Again...I would like to stand up and give a great big HALLELUJAH for the HOPE OF THE GLORY OF GOD...YES...AND AMEN!!!!!! ...but we must read on.

I don't know what you are going through...and I don't know how long you have been going through it...BUT I do know...that IF you are a believer...versus a nominal Christian...or a religious person...that God has purpose and plan...and you will come out the other side of the RUMBLE intact...with maybe a little limp like Jacob did when he RUMBLED with God...and had not only a name change...but a legacy change. (Genesis 32:24-32)
